Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
